题目：Young people who commit serious crimes, such as a rubbery or a violent attack should be punished in the same way as adults. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Recently, a higher proportion of youth are arrested and proven to be involved in serious crimes. Some people argue that it would be too aggressive if these youth who age below 18 are to be charged and treated as adults. However, I personally, believe that depending on the type and severity of the offense committed, the same punishment as adults may have to be imposed.
Most legal systems prescribe specific procedures when dealing with juveniles. They are ordered to complete sentences through probation, home confinement or placement in a foster home. In some cases, social workers are assigned to help juvenile offenders avoid a life of crime by teaching useful living and social skills. All of these is believed to be effective to rehabilitate the offenders and deter them from repeat offenses. Unfortunately, during the mean time, the juvenile violent crime rates have grown almost twice as quickly as adult crime rates. One obvious explanation is that just because of these specific procedures, juveniles are prone to feel they are practically untouchable by the long arm of the law. This is why harsh punishments rather than mild ones should be implemented especially for those who committed heavy offense like a rubbery or a violent attack.
In addition, being punished in the same way as adults will force minors to shoulder the responsibility and consequence and allow them a deep reflection on their criminal acts. Spoiled by their over-protective parents and secured in their insular worlds, juveniles are indifferent to moral codes and unburdened by guilt. Also fueled by their self-centered desires, they will take risks that mature, responsible adults would not dare take under normal circumstances. The intervenes of law enforcement and threats of punishment enable minors to step out of their delusional world and shape them to be responsible social members with correct values.
In short，specific treatments does not seem real to these juvenile offenders, unless they experiences harsh punishments firsthand. Being punished in the same way as adults is as geared towards rehabilitation as it is towards retribution and deterrence.
